Voting Plan

I am registered to vote in Colorado, and my voting plan is to vote early and in person. In Boulder County, CO voting is opening in phases, with the earliest voting centers opening on October 19, 2020. One of these voting centers is on campus at the university I attend, so I will be voting at that location.

I am aware that all things are subject to change so I will be monitoring this website, https://www.bouldercounty.org/elections/, in order to remain informed. I plan to vote on October 20, 2020 when I am on campus. If I am unable to vote that day I will continue to go to this location (or other if this site is insufficient) until I have cast my ballot.

I have already received the absentee ballot I requested a few weeks ago. I plan to fill it out and drop it off at an early voting poll site between Oct 24 and Nov 1, as laid out here: elections.ny.gov/VotingAbsentee. According to voteearlyny.org, the closest early voting poll site to me is PS 175, so I plan to go there to drop off my ballot.

What’s a Plank?

A plank is a component of a political platform. So let’s start there.

What is a political platform?

From Wikipedia: “A political party platform or program is a formal set of principal goals which are supported by a political party or individual candidate, in order to appeal to the general public, for the ultimate purpose of garnering the general public's support and votes about complicated topics or issues. "Plank" is the term often given to the components of the political platform – the opinions and viewpoints about individual topics, as held by a party, person, or organization…

A party platform is sometimes referred to as a manifesto[1] or a political platform. Across the Western world, political parties are highly likely to fulfill their election promises.[2]

Interested? You can see political platforms dating back to 1840 here.

So then what IS a plank?

From Wikipedia: “The word "plank" depicts a component of an overall political platform, as a metaphorical reference to a basic stage made out of boards or planks of wood. The metaphor can return to its literal origin when public speaking or debates are actually held upon a physical platform.” A subplank is simply a component of the plank.

Why DID LEEANNE include a plank in this art project?

Two reasons:

  1. People vote for a variety of reasons. Voting is a human right, and our reasons for voting are as diverse as our lived experiences. Leeanne believes that sharing the plank that inspires each of these artists helps to demonstrate the many ways individuals come to the polls.

  2. Civic education is an important component of civic engagement. Getting to know political processes, such as the development and publication of a political platform, is an important but often overlooked component of the political process. Leeanne’s hope is that more people will get to know political party platforms and how these platforms impact elections as well as policy and governing.

Artists’ plank inspirations:

Mishi Castroverde: Protecting & Enforcing Voting Rights (Subplank)

Jordan Fife Hunt: Expanding Access to Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment (Subplank)

Leeanne G-Bowley: Revitalizing American Diplomacy (Subplank)

Gierre J. Godley/Project 44: Healing The Soul of America

Katarina Lott and Shauna Sorensen: Combating the Climate Crisis and Pursuing Environmental Justice

Angel P: Achieving Racial Justice and Equality (Subplank)

What Is The #DanceArtistElectionProject?

an art project created by Leeanne G-Bowley designed to share dance artists’ enthusiasm for voting in the 2020 general election. Artists have identified a component of the 2020 Democratic National Convention Platform that is inspiring their vote. Each artist then created a short dance film reflecting this inspiration and commits to an election plan for the 2020 General Election on November 3rd

Artists are asked to contribute 1 hour of work to this project and are paid $50 for their work creating content. Artists retain the rights to the work and give permission to Leeanne G-Bowley to edit, distribute, and utilize in furtherance of this project.

Artists are asked to:

  1. Create a “instagrammable” video which will displayed on this page as well as pushed out publicly via social media.

  2. Share their election plan.

  3. Share the plank or subplank of the DNC 2020 platform that is inspiring them to participate in the 2020 election.

What’s a Voter Plan?

It’s your plan for casting your vote in the 2020 Election.

Step 1: .Are you registered? Check your registration Is it up to date? Is your current address listed? That may affect your polling place.

Step 2: How? Determine how you will cast your vote. What is allowed in your state? Mail-In or Absentee Voting? Early Voting? What is safest voting method for you? What are the deadlines for absentee voting? Where is your early voting polling place?

Step 3: When and Where? Once you determine how you are voting, figure out all of the logistics.

Mail-in: Do you need to request a ballot? If so, what is the deadline to request a mail-in ballot? What is the deadline to send the ballot back? Can you drop off the ballot somewhere? Where is that? When are you dropping off your ballot or mailing it?

Early Voting: This year, more states are holding early voting. Check if early voting is available in your state. Your polling place for early voting may be different from your regular polling place. Determine the day and time you plan on voting. Have a back-up plan.

Election Day - November 3rd: Where is your polling place? What are the hours? When are you going to vote? What do you need to bring with you? What’s your work’s policy about being late or missing work for voting?

Step 4: Commit to following your plan. Share it with others! Have a back-up plan. Check out what’s on the ballot before you vote. Remember to vote up and down the ballot. Local elections are very important!
